Ultra smooth with deep chocolate flavor, my high-protein chocolate mousse is an anytime treat that packs a protein punch. Whipped cottage cheese and chocolate protein powder star in this decadent mousse that satisfies even the biggest sweet tooth! Make sure to use a food processor or blender – this is crucial for the creamiest and lightest texture.

Key Ingredients

  • Cottage cheese: The key ingredient instrumental in creating a fluffy texture while also adding protein. I love adding cottage cheese to sweet and savory recipes for extra protein – it’s totally versatile in flavor and has so many uses.
  • Chocolate protein powder: For a double dose of protein, add chocolate protein powder (which also gives the mousse an even richer chocolate taste). I recommend using whey protein for this recipe – my favorite is Garden of Life Chocolate Whey .
  • Cocoa powder: For that deep, dark, irresistible chocolate flavor.
  • Maple syrup: A splash of this natural sweetener is a welcome balance to the cocoa powder.

Step-by-Step: How to Make High-Protein Chocolate Mousse

  1. Blend the cottage cheese : It takes about 3-5 minutes to get that super creamy consistency, so scrape down the sides of the food processor as needed. No one wants lumpy mousse!
  2. Add the remaining ingredients : Pulse until well combined and smooth, using a spatula to help incorporate. It’s ready to serve when it’s light and fluffy.
  3. Serve or refrigerate for later : Chocolate mousse is best enjoyed cold, so eat immediately or transfer into small jars and refrigerate until ready to eat.

TIP: If you don’t have a food processor, a high-speed blender works in a pinch. Unfortunately, a hand or stand mixer won’t get the cottage cheese blended enough for the desired texture.

Toppings & Customizations

Vanilla Chocolate Mousse: To mix up the flavor, use vanilla protein powder instead of chocolate. It will taste a little bit like a twist cone!

Peanut Butter Chocolate Mousse: Add a spoonful of peanut butter in step 2 for a delicious variation.

Sweetener: Instead of maple syrup, try using the same amount of honey or agave instead.

Toppings: For a little something extra, try topping the mousse with berries, chopped nuts, mini chocolate chips, sprinkles, or a dollop of whipped cream .

Storage & Freezer Notes

Store any leftover mousse for up to 3 days in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Give it a good stir before serving!

Or, turn this high-protein mousse into a high-protein chocolate “nice cream” variation (here’s my recipe for healthy chocolate nice cream to try next)! Freeze for a few hours in a freezer-safe container and enjoy immediately.

Serving Suggestions

This mousse tastes delightful on it’s own for a pre or post-workout snack, afternoon pick-me-up, or dessert but it also makes a great dip for fresh fruit like strawberries, bananas, or apples. Make sure to serve chilled – the colder the better!

I don’t recommend it. Protein powder adds both texture and taste to this mousse. Instead of chocolate protein powder, try vanilla or mint.

This recipe is specifically formulated for whipped cottage cheese. For a high-protein alternative made with Greek yogurt, try my chocolate strawberry frozen yogurt bark (still high in protein with chocolate flavor) or these protein frozen yogurt cups .
